Iron Man (2008)

The Invincible Iron Man. This is one of the rare exceptions in which a comic book movie is done exactly right. Entertainment, action, comic references, it’s all there in what launched the current Marvel movie fervour that’s sweeping the globe.

Right from jump street, this flick dials in on the entertainment value you and sets up a relatable, laid-back world. Watching Iron Man feels more like a hip (in the good sense of the word) action movie than a comic book adaptation. The origin story, as well as the mythic and it’s characters, of Iron Man were presented in a way that was modernized while still maintaining the true sense of the characters and the world they inhabit. The way this movie is put together seems real and feels as if it really could happen.

As anyone who’s seen this movie knows, the weight of success rests heavily on the shoulders of Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man. He portrays the character with such ease that it almost seems like there’s no acting being done. Downey displays perfectly the unyielding arrogance and overconfidence of the character while still keeping him likeable. And watching the character grow through the film is a real treat. But it’s not Tony Stark alone carrying this picture. The supporting cast does more than their share to back up the flagship hero. Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts against RDJ’s Stark absolutely holds her own and the back and firths they share are great movie unto themselves. Jeff Bridges brings it on strong as Obadiah Stane (even more so without his suit). Even the voice over for JARVIS had a fun to watch/hear relationship with Tony Stark.

The visual effects and cinematic style in this one are just slick. All versions of the Iron Man suits look amazing and the scenes with the red and gold Mark II suit are ridiculously awesome. Again, the tech throughout this movie look like they really could exist. The only thing that looks off in this movie is the Iron Monger suit. Much like Hagrid, that suit just looks too big to be allowed. But you get that up against the Iron Man suit and it spells a good time.
